Château de Créancey

Créancey is situated near Pouilly en Auxois : 270 km South east of PARIS by the A6 motorway PARIS - LYON exit Pouilly en Auxois. 190 km North of LYON by the A6 motorway. 40km West of Dijon by the A38 motorway.
The chateau was built in 1650 by Antoine de Comeau, Lord of Créancey, Governor of Nuits St George, Attendant to the Prince of Condé and later on steward to Louis XIV and Commander of the Chateau of Dijon.
The chateau stayed in the Comeau family until the end of the eighteenth century when by marriage it was transferred to the de Montille family, who kept possession of it until the beginning of the twentieth century. It has been sold three times since and now belongs to Fiona and Bruno De Wulf, keen amateurs of architecture and old stones ! They bought the chateau in 1994, it was love at first sight, the old ruins, beams on the floor none existent ceilings and crumbling walls did not conceal the beauty of the building. The majority of the chateau had not been lived in for over 70 years.
Seven years of reflection and hard work, a huge project, supported by Bruno's children, Sophie, Henri, Pierre, Camille et Pauline, the De Wulf's persevered. The support of "Le Henri", an ex wood cutter turned stone mason was invaluable and he soon fell in love with the chateau and stopped counting his hours. Together with local craftsmen the roof was repaired the walls rebuilt, the windows replaced, plumbing, electricity and heating put in.
The result is superb. The old fashioned lime rendering and the bare oak beams give the chateau an authentic feeling with all the advantages of modern facilities
This is a home and not a museum.
Five bedrooms may now be rented for Bed and Breakfast, and the recently renovated gardener's cottage within the grounds may be rented on a self-catering weekly basis.
