Abbaye Royale

 

 

 

The abbaye was founded in 817 by Pepin d'Aquitaine to receive the head of St John the Baptist. Several times destroyed by the Vikings in the 9th century, by the Enbglish during the war between the French and the English, and finally by the portestants during the war of Religion. The abbey was rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries. You can still see today the building where the monks lived : reception room, Abbot's drawing room, refectory, monk's cells... Today, the abbey houses the mmunicipal school of music, the library and the Centre of European Culture.
