Château de Vault de Lugny

In the 12th century, the Lord Jocelyn d'Arcy was made one of the knights of the Duc de Bourgogne, and established his fortified Château on this site in 1120. Jocelin the IV fought under the leadership of the Duc de Bourgogne, in the religious crusades of that period. These military exploits were blessed at Vezelay prior to the departure for the Holy Land. Since Jocelin the IV had no son and heir, his name vanished after his death. His daughter, Isabelle married Guy II de Toucy "Seignior de Bazarne", thus placing Vault de Lugny under his control.
Unfortunately the king Louis XI disgraced the Lords of the domain (as were all the Duc de Bourgogne's allies) and as a result the Chateau was dismantled and demolished. Fortunately the Dungeon, built in the 13th century, was judged useless and was therefore spared. During the Religious Wars, the Protestants used the site as a defensive assembly point and they enlarged the moats. Thereafter, the Lord Jaucourt and his descendants owned the Château for four centuries. The last survivor of the family, Jacques Anne, sold it in 1773 to Germain de Montmien. In 1776 it was purchased by the Comte de Crillon who himself subsequently sold it to the Lord of Vaulgrenant. In 1859, the Domain was bequeathed to the Cartiers (a local farmer's family).
In 1967, the present owners purchased the property that was at that time completely empty and virtually uninhabitable. They have subsequently restored more than seventy percent of the buildings and finally opened it as a hotel in 1986.
Now you can enjoin the comfortable rooms and the restaurant. At the Chateau de Vault de Lugny dining is always an unusual gastromic experience. The Hotel is open daily from the 6 of April, 2007 to the 10 of November, 2007.
