Musée d'Art Américain de Giverny

One hundred years ago, a colony of American artists (including the likes of Mary Cassatt, Lilla Cabot Perry and Willard Metcalf) stablished a colony in Giverny. They were intent on brushing up their impressionist techniques in the presence of the master himself, Claude Monet. From its foundation in 1992, the Musée d'Art Américain Giverny has always strived to honour the ties that unite the artistic heritages of France and the USA through the holding of a variety of temporary exhibitions.

France's only specialist museum of American art, the Musée d'Art Américain exhibits work spanning the period 1750 to date. For 2003, the museum will be welcoming international exhibitions including American Beauty : Masterpieces from the Detroit Institute of Arts, 1770-1920 and Paris, Capital of America : The American Avant-Garde in Paris, 1918-1939.

Located a stone's throw from Claude Monet's home, the museum was founded by industrialist and art lover Daniel J. Terra. Nestling on a hillside, its modern architecture blends perfectly into the countryside around Giverny, cradled as it is in extensive flower gardens and fields of poppies.

The museum also offers a full range of cultural activities: conferences, art history courses, educational programs, workshops, documentary resources, concerts, and guided tours of the gardens of leading impressionists.
