Château de Martigné-Briand
When Good King Henry (Henri IV) came to Martigné-Briand, then a fortified town, the wine-growers of the fief did not fail to present him with the best of their wines which had represented the main source of wealth since the Middle Ages.
Erected at the very beginning of the 16th century for René de la Jumellière, this luxurious seigniorial residence still displays on its façades the garlands of flowers in which the gothic flamboyant and the Renaissance arts harmonoiusly mingle.
The vaults of the Oratories which had been placed within the massive towers are quite outstanding !
Its medieval underground passages (12th century) are a reminder of the warlike traditions of the Middle Ages.
Set on fire during the Vendée wars by the "Republican infernal columns", its ruined silhouette has remained the eternal look-out post of the vineyards of the upper Layon.
Every year, on the 1st Sunday of October : the "Belle Epoque" wine harvest.
